Pet ID is an important first step to lessening the crushing numbers of homeless cats. The number of stray cats brought to a shelter who have trackable ID is less than 15%! If these cats who already have loving homes could be reunited with their families, shelters would have more resources to devote truly homeless cats who have no families or are surrendered in shelters. An excellent combinatin of pet ID is a microchip (which is permanent) and a collar with a pet tag (which is easily updated and visible). That way both your neighbours and City animal services can contact you to reunite your kitty!
